Croydon
Croydon schools
Croydon has the highest population of all the London boroughs, including the highest number of children and young people (0-19), representing 25% of the borough's population, 40% of whom come from Black and Ethnic Minority groups.
The local authority maintains:
• six dedicated nursery schools/early years centres (many primary schools also have a nursery class)
• 85 primary schools, including the only Greek Orthodox school in the country
• 16 local authority secondary schools, offering a wide choice of specialisms
• 6 special schools and 6 pupil referral units
There are also five academies, one city technology college and three sixth form colleges.
"Better outcomes for children and young people" is one of Croydon Council's priorities and ensures a high level of support for schools, together with an appropriate level of challenge which secures continuous improvement in educational standards.
A newly created and strengthened education and learning division is ensuring that all Croydon's children and young people reach their full potential through the delivery of its five priorities:-
• raising all standards
• narrowing the gap
• enriching the curriculum
• building learning communities
• improving service delivery
